Hi, my name is Abby Fitch. I’m the founder and chief adventure officer behind Kallia Adventures, and I thought it would be helpful to start this blog by introducing who I am and why this adventure company startup is here
So without further ado, here goes…
I’ve been in the corporate world for about fifteen years. I started out consulting in the Big 5 in information technology, and worked my way up moving between a number of different companies and in a couple of different industries, until I ended up at a big biotechnology company managing extremely large, critical IT projects, and having a team of people working for me.
I did well for myself, and I’m proud of what I accomplished. I worked for great companies, and I have nothing but good things to say about any of them.
But… I was stressed. I was always stressed. I was stressed because I had so much to do. I was working 60+ hour weeks, trying to keep relationships with friends and family intact, and somehow find time for my own needs. I was trying make the latest last-minute deadline, fly to Europe for a meeting, and still make sure that the dog made it to the vet, that the dry cleaning got picked up, that I called my grandma on Thursdays.
My anxiety rose, to the point where I started having panic attacks. To be honest, I felt trapped.
I discovered that the times that I felt most free were times when I was out in nature, with a small group of people whose company I enjoyed. It was an escape from the constraints of my day-to-day, and helped to restore my balance so that I could maintain my hectic pace. I planned as many long weekends as I could around those outdoor adventures, since my responsibilities both professionally and personally generally prevented me from being able to get away for longer than that.
Because I loved it so much, I was always the one who volunteered to plan these trips – whether it was camping on an island, skiing in the Rockies, or hiking through a national park. I discovered that I had a gift for it – friends started asking to get advance notice before I sent out invitations, so that they could be included before the trip filled up. I got that a lot.
I realized how much joy I personally derived from arranging these trips, where people could explore new places, discover something new about themselves, and recharge – and how good I was at it.
And thereby Kallia Adventures was born.
We’re still in the early stages of getting this site up and running. I’ve been doing this for years now, but it’s time to make it official. I’m very excited about it; we’ll be announcing our 2018 adventure plans soon. I hope you’ll keep an eye on our journey; you can keep updated by following this blog, or by signing up for our email list.
I’d like to leave you with one of my favorite quotes, something I believe from the bottom of my heart, that underpins this whole venture:
The adventure begins now. Want to come?
